It was the start of a harrowing obituary for a mother from Illinois.
It was preceded by the deaths of more than 4,531,799 others infected with COVID-19. She was vaccinated but was infected by others who chose not to vaccinate. The price was her life,” Candace Cay Ayers’ death notice says.
Ayers of Springfield surrendered September 3 after her family believed she contracted the virus while visiting an unvaccinated friend in Mississippi. It was reported on NBC’s “Today”..
Ayers received two doses of the Moderna vaccine when she became eligible – but she had rheumatoid arthritis and was ImmunocompromisedWhich experts now believe may put them at even greater risk penetrating infections.
But at the time of her flight in July, her family thought such cases were rare.
“We did everything we advised,” her son Mark said today.
“I wish there was better science at the time that said maybe they should stay home, maybe those precautions would be good for normal people, but [not] for weak immunity. I wish the doctors wouldn’t allow my mother to travel to Mississippi.”
While preparing her obituary, the woman’s relatives decided they wanted to share a message that they thought Ayers would have approved.
“My mom was a fighter,” Mark said, “and my mom was very angry with people because they hadn’t been vaccinated and they weren’t wearing masks.” “My mom has been very vocal about people who just refused to take those precautions, and so we thought it was a good idea to put that in the obituary and make a statement.”
Ayers and her husband tested positive for the virus within days of returning from their trip.
Her son said she eventually was hospitalized with pneumonia, and then was put on a ventilator.
“After that, any progress my mum had made regarding her lungs getting a little better was erased, and the pneumonia retaliated,” her son said.
“In the last week or so of her life, her lungs were completely white on X-rays – they were completely filled with fluid and inflammation.”
As her health continued to deteriorate, doctors advised the family to remove the mother from life support devices.
“She took four or five breaths after that, and died there within minutes,” her son said.
