Update for Wednesday, March 3

Oklahoma on Wednesday reported 747 new cases of COVID-19. The cumulative number of cases in the state is 425,747, according to the Oklahoma State Department of Health.

The Ministry of Health said on Wednesday that it will change the way COVID-related deaths are reported. OSDH will use a temporary death count so that deaths reported in the state reflect those of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and will show a “timely picture” of the disease’s impact in Oklahoma.

Before Wednesday, there was a difference of about 2,500 between the death toll reported by OSDH and the death toll reported by the CDC. The temporary death toll on Wednesday was 7,035.

The provisional death toll provided by the CDC is based on death certificates. From OSDH: “With the increase in cases towards the end of 2020, our investigative epidemiologists are starting to encounter greater numbers of incomplete records requiring in-depth investigation. This process subsequently caused an increase in the variance between the number of deaths in OSDH.”

“We feel now is the right time for us to make this shift in our reporting system so that there is no perception that we are minimizing these deaths,” said state epidemiologist Dr. Jared Taylor. “We understand that each of these deaths is a tragedy and a huge cost to that individual’s family and friends, to the state of Oklahoma, and to the world.”
